NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY DIVISION

Objective
To ensure that food security for all citizens is maintained at all levels and at all times.

Functions

  • To facilitate formulation, implementation and review of policies on food security including food aid policy
  • To prepare and coordinate national strategies and programmes on food security in the country
  • To carry out overall monitoring of food crops performance at all stages for early warning on impending food situation
  • To facilitate dissemination of post-harvest technologies with a view to reducing post-harvest losses and promote food crops utilization
  • To liaise with the National Grain Reserve Agency and Disaster Management Division in the Prime Minister's office on all issues related to food situation in the country
  • The Division will be led by a Director and will comprise two Sections as follows:-
  • Crop Monitoring and Early Warning Section
  • Post Harvest Management Section

Crop Monitoring and Early Warning Section

The Section will perform the following activities:‑

  • Prepare preliminary and final food crop production forecasts
  • Implement early warning systems
  • Advise on proper balancing of food levels across the country
  • Prepare reports on position of food levels across the country
  • Build capacity of RS and LGAs to provide accurate data on early warnings systems
  • Determine levels of food imports and exports
  • Provide advice on farm operations in accordance to weather changes information data
  • Liaise with the National Grain Reserve Agency and Disaster Management Department in the Prime Minister's Office on all issues related to food situation

 

Post Harvest Managemet Section

The Section will perform the following activities:‑

  • Initiate, review and provide guidelines on food crops handling and backstopping services
  • Initiate, review and provide guidelines and backstopping services on food storage facilities and structures
  • Develop and disseminate technical packages on food crops processing and preservation, in collaboration with other related institutions
  • Provide post harvest advisory services on food crops processing in collaboration with other relevant institutions
  • Provide post harvest advisory services including nutrition based on food crops
  • Promote utilization of food crops including drought tolerant crops
  • Provide advice on food  quality and standards
  • Build capacity  of RS and LGAs on post harvest management
  • Promote flour blending of selected food crops such as maize/sorghum and cassava to expand food basket and availability
  • Provide information on areas, production and opportunities for private sector investment in food crops processing
