Roles and Functions of NFRA

Having adopted all the functions of the then Strategic Grain Reserve, the National Food Reserve Agency shall:

Procure and store emergency food stock to the tune of 150,000mt that should suffice addressing a food disaster for three (3) months period regarded enough to order and secure food imports from abroad.

Stock re-cycling and

stock release that would stabilize food prices in the market. The third function has never been met due to budget constraints/ decontrol in the food markets which allowed participation of private traders in food marketing. Most of food crops neither have the regulatory authority nor marketing tool; therefore NFRA will act as a marketing tool with multi food crops, and serve various cultural groups with different cultural foods. NFRA will operate efficiently because there is a government policy of liberalization that allows (NFRA) to respond to the market, availability of storage capacities within the (NFRA) stations and modern storage facilities in the country at affordable prices. Food crops are available at affordable price, modern preservatives and pesticides are easily accessible in the country and elsewhere, thus NFRA will operate at cost recovery bases and there will be no ceiling for stocks as it is for now of 150,000mt of maize.
