Land Use-Planning Division

Objective
To provide expertise on agricultural land use planning and management.

Functions

  • To facilitate agricultural land use planning in LGAs and RS
  • To build capacity of LGAs and RS in agricultural land use planning and management
  • To plan, demarcate and ensure proper utilization of agricultural land
  • To enforce agricultural land legislations

The Division will be led by a Director and will comprise two Sections as follows:-

  • Land Use Planning Section
  • Land Use Management Section

Agricultural Land Use Planning Section

The Section will perform the following activities:-

  • Identify, demarcate and maintain agricultural land databank
  • Facilitate acquisition of legal ownership of agricultural land / farms
  • Undertake survey and demarcation of agricultural land
  • Produce agricultural land use management plans and maps for districts and national levels
  • Disseminate to LGAs and RS relevant technological packages for agricultural land use planning
  • Disseminate to LGAs and RS relevant on-farm soil and water management technologies ith particular focus on soil erosion control and on-farm rain water harvesting
  • Establish and operate a national data bank for agricultural land use planning
  • Use information communication technology to promote sharing and exchange of relevant information on sustainable land use planning

The Section will be led by an Assistant Director.

Agricultural Land Use Management Section

The Section will perform the following activities:-

  • Initiate and Review policy and strategies to address current issues of relevance to sustainability in land use planning and management
  • Prepare agricultural land/ soil suitability/ capability classification and disseminate to users
  • Develop and disseminate guidelines for agricultural land use management
  • Identify and prevent farming activities in highly eroded agricultural land that needs urgent intervention and take appropriate response
  • Undertake land evaluation for use and management planning
  • Prepare relevant land use management packages for districts
  • Propose Investment options on demarcated land
  • Use information communication technology to promote sharing and exchange of relevant information on sustainable land use management
  • Disseminate to LGAs, and RS relevant on-farm soil fertility management packages
  • Disseminate to LGAs and RS relevant packages for agro- forestry
  • Monitor environmental degradation on cultivated lands with the view to take relevant and timely interventions
  • Protect catchments of irrigated land to support irrigation initiatives countrywide

The Section will be led by an Assistant Director.
