Main activities involved in Sorghum /Millets, Maize and Grain Legumes Research (Southern Zone)

 

ARI Naliendele collaborates with ARI Ilonga in developing appropriate agronomic practices for cereal and legume crops based farming systems. The aim is to monitor on-station and on-farm trials for sorghum/millets, maize, cowpea, pigeonpea, soybeans and green gram improved materials for high yielding and quality produce. Cereals and grain legume unit undertakes identification of major pests and diseases of sorghum, maize and grain legume crops and recommends appropriate control measures.

Working Experience

•   Assistant Field Officer in Cotton Breeding at Agricultural Research Institute Ukiriguru, (May 1975 -June 1979).

• Field Officer in Sorghum, Maize and Grain Legume Research at Agricultural Research Institute Naliendele, (June, 1981 -1995).

• (May, 1994): Participated in a Striga screening Survey organized by Ilonga Agricultural Research Institute, Eastern Zone (Dr. Mbwaga) in collaboration with Department of Research and Training in the Ministry of Agricultural and Food Security conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• Senior Agricultural Field Officer in Sorghum, Maize and Grain Legume Research at Agricultural Research Institute Naliendele, (June, 1995 -2005); Facilitated the release of Tegemeo, Macia and Hakika sorghum varieties.

• (June, 1995): Participated in a Participatory Research Survey organized by Agricultural Socio-Economic Program (the late Dr. Sikana) at Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute.

• (July, 1995): Participated in a Small-medium Maize Adoption Survey organized by Agricultural Socio-Economic Program (the late Mr. N.A Katinila) at Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute.

• (August, 1996): Participated in a Pigeonpea Pest Screening Survey organized by ICRISAT (Dr. E. Minja) in collaboration with Department of Research and Training in the Ministry of Agricultural and Food Security, conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (June, 1997): Participated in a Bambaranut germplasm collection Survey organized by TPRI-Arusha, Tanzania (Mama Nkya) in collaboration with Department of Research and Training in the Ministry of Agricultural and Food Security, conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (September, 1997): Participated in a Radio Perception Survey organized by RIPPS in collaboration with Socio-Economics Department (the late Mr. N.A Katinila) and Radio Tanzania Kanda ya Kusini conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (September, 2000): Participated in a Cashew Production Trends Survey organized by Cashew Agronomy Department (Dr. L J Kasuga), Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute, Mtwara, Tanzania conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (April, 2001): Participated in a Sorghum germplasm collection mission organized by ICRISAT (Dr. E Monyo) in collaboration with Department of Research and Training in the Ministry of Agricultural and Food Security conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (August, 2001): Participated in a Pigeonpea Pest Screening Survey organized by ICRISAT (Drs. J K. Mligo, Slim and Paula) in collaboration with Department of Research and Training in the Ministry of Agricultural and Food Security, conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (February, 2003): Participated in a Sorghum germplasm collection mission organized Crops Department at Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute (Dr. O Mponda) conducted in the Southern Zone, Tanzania.

• (March 2007): Participated in a Baseline Survey for Groundnut Production conducted in ten villages in Masasi District, Tanzania

• (March 2007): Participated in a Cassava Processing Survey conducted in five villages in Masasi District, Tanzania.

• Working as Principal Agricultural Field Officer in Sorghum, Maize and Grain Legume Research Institute Naliendele, (June, 2005 - to date 2008)
