MAWAZIRI SEKTA YA KILIMO WA AFRIKA MASHARIKI WAKUTANA, WAZIRI MKENDA ABAINISHA MKAKATI WA TANZANIA

In May, prices for round potatoes increased by 2% while those for rice, sorghum, maize and dry beans decreased by 5.1%, 3.4%, 3.3%, and 3% respectively.

The decline in prices is an indication of sufficient supply in the markets. Also, the ongoing harvest could have influenced traders to release their stocks into the markets. On average, prices of staple foods are significantly lower compared to a year earlier.

 Prices for traditional export crops including, coffee- arabica, coffee -robusta, cotton and tea increased by 10.8%, 7.23%, 0.18%, 0.09% and 3.2 respectively while prices for tobacco and wheat decreased marginally by 0.34% and 3.69% respectively.  Prices for edible oil in the global market in May increased by 8.24%. This affected domestic prices for cooking oil in the markets as the country imports about 60% of the demand.

Prices for DAP and UREA increased by 5.75% and 1.08% respectively between April and May 2021. Prices for both fertilizers have been increasing since mid-2020 mainly due to strong demand and relatively increase of crude oil price.
