Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute - Ilonga (Kilosa)

The Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute (MATI) llonga is a government-training institute under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security It is located about 10km North-East of Kilosa Town, Morogoro region. It was established is 1972, and over the years it has grown in size and quality.

It offers certificate and diploma level training in the fields of Agriculture and Livestock production, Food Science and Nutrition, It also offers tailor made training to farmers and other clients.

DIPLOMA LEVEL TRAINING PROGRAMMES
The institute offers two-year diploma level programmes for in-service students and form six leavers. In-service students should hold certificates from any MAlI or LlTl while form six leaves are those who did science subjects and obtained at least a principal and subsidiary passes.

DIPLOMA IN FOOD PRODUCTION AND NUTRITION (DFPN)
This diploma aims at equipping trainees with knowledge and skills in food production, processing, preservation and utilization so to raise nutritional status and income of families. The course

DIPLOMA IN GENERAL AGRICULTURE (DGA)
This diploma provides a wide range of skills in agriculture and livestock production so that at the end trainees can perform better as employees in agribusiness and as private farmers. The course content is as follows:

  • Microbiology and parasitology
  • Livestock diseases
  • Horticulture
  • Crop protection
  • Principles of crop and livestock production
  • Land Surveying
  • Production of cereals, legumes and tubers

TEACHING STAFF
The Institute has well-trained staff who have specialized in different areas such as Food science, Home management, Horticulture, Agriculture, Livestock, Agronomy Agriculture Extension, Farm management and Farm mechanization.

The Institute has a spacious and well stocked library with up to date books, journals and other publication to cater for different disciplines offered.

TRAINING AND PRODUCTION UNITS

  • There are several units that enable the trainees to get “Hands on Experience” during practical sessions, The units include:
  • Dairy unit well kept animals raised;
  • Poultry and rabbit unit on which student can practice s stock production;
  • Crop farm on which different field crops are grown;
  • Oxenization unit with well trained oven;
  • Rural craft unit where students can practice different mechanization skills;
  • Organic garden where crops are grown using no chemicals;
  • Computer and an audio-visual unit which facilitate including training and producing training materials;
  • Small scale canning unit;
  • Laboratory which is equipped to cater for different analyes.

COLLABORATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATlONS
The Institute maintains formal links with Ilonga Agricultural Research Institute and Msimba Seed Farm who are next door neighbors. These and other commercial private farms around provide ideal practical sites to visit by our students to complement their theoretical knowledge.

TRAINING FEES
The Institute offers full board and lodging services, However, it can also accommodate day students at much lower rates. At present the training fees are:
(a) lnstitutional organizational sponsored Tshs. 540,000/= per year;
(b) Self or parent sponsored Tshs. 360,000/= per year;
(c) Day Student Tshs. 200,000/= per year; and
(d) Foreign students US$ 2000 per year
