TANZANIA AND SOUTH SUDAN FORGE STRATEGIC AGRICULTURAL PACT

Tanzania and South Sudan have agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, expand regional trade and strengthen food security, with the shared goal of improving the livelihoods of their citizens.

Speaking at the bilateral meeting held on August 4, 2026, Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Daniel Chongolo (MP) welcomed his counterpart to the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition at the  Dr. John Samuel Malecela grounds in Dodoma.

“Your presence at this year's Nane Nane Exhibition reflects the strong and growing friendship between Tanzania and the Republic of South Sudan, as well as our shared commitment to advancing agricultural cooperation, regional trade, and food security,” said Hon. Chongolo.

On his part, South Sudan’s Minister for and Food Security, Hon. Clement Juma Mbugoniwia (MP) emphasized the importance of market-driven agriculture in transforming his country and Africa as a whole.  “The theme of this year’s Nanenane exhibition Leveraging Market Intelligence:  Enhancing Productivity towards Vision 2050,” underscores the central role that agriculture must play in driving sustainable economic transformation across our continent,” said Hon. Chongolo.

He highlighted South Sudan’s vast investment opportunities in crops such as maize, rice, millet and beans, while commending Tanzania’s achievements in agricultural research, mechanization, irrigation, cooperative development and agro-processing.  “We believe Tanzania’s experiences offer valuable lessons that can support South Sudan's own agricultural transformation journey,” Hon. Mbugoniwia explained.

Also participating to the discussion, Prof. Godius Walter Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, underscored the critical role of transport infrastructure in enabling agricultural trade.  He outlined opportunities for collaboration in railway, air cargo and trading lake transport to facilitate the movement of goods.
